Commonly Asked Questions About Dental Health Checks
Regular dentist visits assist in keeping your mouth and teeth healthy, and are a part of maintaining your overall health. Many people are afraid of going to the dentist, but it’s not scary if you understand what we do and why we do it.
Dental scaling and polishing are some of the most common treatments you will experience during a regular visit, and are essential for the early diagnosis of any oral abnormalities that may not be visible to you.
From Jurong to Tampines, our dental clinics across Singapore offer oral health checks to help you keep up with your oral health. Here are some of the top queries and questions we get about our dental health checks:
1. How frequently should I have a dental health check?
People with healthy teeth and no history of cavities or gum disease may generally see their dentist once or twice a year. People at high risk of dental illness may need to see their dentist every three to four months depending on their medical history, teeth quality, and oral hygiene practices.
2. What should I keep in mind before my dental health check?
Any expectations, requirements, or anxiety you may have should be shared with your dentist beforehand so that they may better understand you and meet your requirements. This includes if you have medical issues or medication that may affect your oral health, any uncertainties you have about taking care of your teeth, or abnormalities you have noticed prior to your appointment.
Our dentists can assist you in determining what has to be done, how and when to do it, and, of course, the associated expenses.
3. What takes place during a dental health check?
Our skilled dentist will thoroughly examine your mouth and face for any abnormalities or indications of a deeper problem. Your teeth and gums will be inspected for cracks, wear and tear, decay, and improper fillings, among other things. We’ll also look for odd swellings or surface changes on your bones, cheeks, tongue, and palate.
During dental health checks for children and teens, the dentist will also address the growth of their teeth and jaw to ensure they are developing normally.
4. What should I expect after my dental health check?
Your dentist will discuss any abnormalities with you immediately after the examination is finished. This might include an explanation of what was seen in your mouth, treatment suggestions for any abnormalities found, preventative measures for any future concerns, dietary advice and proper brushing techniques, and counselling on how to break any damaging habits you may have.
Dental x-rays may be taken if necessary – all performed safely by our trained staff.
Following the dental health check, scaling and polishing may be carried out to give your teeth a thorough clean.
5. What is scaling and polishing and why is it important?
Professional teeth cleaning is known as dental scaling and polishing and is used to remove plaque and tartar (calculus) from the surface of your teeth. Regular removal of these deposits over time may help avoid mild and severe gum disease.
6. How can I keep my teeth healthy inbetween dental health checks?
Brush your teeth and tongue with a fluoride toothpaste at least twice a day, and floss at least once. You should also avoid sugar since they increase the number of germs in your mouth, leading to increased plaque and possibly cavities. Tobacco can also stain teeth, cause gum disease, and increase your risk of oral cancer so if you are a frequent smoker you can discuss options for oral health management with our dentists during your next appointment.
