GIVING YOU THE CALM AND COMFORT YOU NEED

GIVING YOU THE CALM AND COMFORT YOU NEED.

SEDATION DENTISTRY

With sedation, a drug is administered before or during the dental procedure to calm a patient or to make patients more comfortable during long procedures.

BENEFITS OF SEDATION DENTISTRY

If a visit to the dentist makes you apprehensive, nervous or anxious – you are not alone. Sedation dentistry is helpful for individuals who have fear or phobia of visiting the dentist, allowing even the most uncomfortable patient to overcome their fear and anxiety. With a relaxed patient, treatment is easier for both the patient and the dentist, as it allows the patient to rest, enabling our team to focus solely on the procedure.

TYPES OF SEDATION DENTISTRY

INHALATION SEDATION

This involves breathing in nitrous oxide, what we call ‘happy air’ through a nosepiece to produce a pleasant, relaxed and calming effect. This reduces fear and anxiety and also increases the amount of anaesthesia a patient feels, enabling them to better tolerate injections or other potentially uncomfortable procedures. Inhalation sedation is generally safe in the hands of a trained dentist and its effects almost instantly wear off once the procedure is finished.

COMMON DENTAL PROCEDURES USING INHALATION SEDATION:

INTRAVENOUS SEDATION

Intravenous (IV) sedation induces a state of deeper relaxation to allow patients to cope with longer or more complex procedures. It involves administering a sedative through a vein, allowing the medication to work very quickly. Since it is administered intravenously, the dentist is able to adjust the level of IV sedation as needed for the procedure. This makes it easy to tailor the amount of sedative used to the specific patient, reducing the risk of complications and side effects. While you will still be in a semi-awake state and you will probably be able to communicate with the dentist, most patients have little or even no memory of the procedure when IV sedation is used. IV sedation is carried by a certified anaesthetist who will monitor the patient throughout the duration of the procedure.
